Dalmatian Dog

The Dalmatian Dog’s origin is uncertain. Some specialists believe that the breed originated in the Yugoslavian region. Others believe that the Dalmatian descends from the Bengal Pointer, which existed in Great Britain. The today’s Dalmatian does have a number of physical features intrinsic to some Pointers. There might have been many dogs involved in the process of formation of the modern Dalmatian, and there is still much discord over the dog’s origin. However, in 1993, the FCI recognized the Yugoslavian roots of the breed, although the Yugoslavian standard is still not accepted as the basic one for the breed.

The Dalmatian Dog is a graceful and athletic canine, measuring 19-24 inches high at the shoulder. This great Walt Disney character is renowned for his outstanding coat color – he has spots of black or liver randomly distributed over the white coat. Dalmatians are naturally active and very intelligent, as they like to take the best they can from their loved ones. Historically, these dogs were bred to accompany horse riders and carriages, and sometimes they had to travel many miles each day. Therefore, Dalmatians are very sturdy and enduring dogs with infinite stamina and never-ending desire to work.

The great Disney fame of the Dalmatian has tremendously boosted the dogs, popularity, creating a specific image of the dog in the hearts of people. However, in order to properly understand the Dalmatian Dog, watching the cartoon alone is not enough. Dalmatians are not as easy to handle as many people believe. They are naturally active and sometimes even rowdy, and they may get out of hand without proper management. These dogs are funny as puppies, but the larger and stronger they get, the more likely they are to display willfulness and become hyperactive. Their ever-boiling energy requires constant vent, without which these dogs may become much less funny. Poor socialization may result in suspicious attitude toward visitors. Males tend to be aggressive toward other males.

Dalmatian Dogs do not have the doggy odor, and they are very clean. They shed twice every year, and require grooming during shedding periods. Dalmatians should not be exposed to drastic temperature fluctuations, since they chill easily. They should not be locked inside the house either, as they cannot do without daily walks and runs. Dalmatians puppies must be checked for hereditary disorders, since about 12 percent of them are prone to deafness. Urinary tract problems are also common to the breed. In order to reduce the risk of stone formation, you can put your Dalmatian Dog on a low protein diet.
