Dalmatians - Breeders - Breeding Lines

Dalmatians are dogs loved all over the world. Many countries not only claim to play a significant role in the development of the Dalmatian in the course of its history, but also continue to perfect the breed's qualities.

At the early stages of the Dalmatian's history breeders had absolutely different pictures in their mind of what the Dalmatian really was. Some of them experimented with the dog's color patterns. They were concerned about the size of the spots, their type, and were striving for symmetrical lines. Others improved hunting qualities of the Dalmatian, and their protection abilities.

Dalmatians - Breeders - British Dogs

Selective breeding started only in England. There is evidence that Dalmatian puppies with undesirable color patterns and spots were done away with soon after their birth. The same fate expected deaf and blue-eyed Dalmatians.

English breeders preferred to use mainly British dogs. Dalmatians from other countries, no matter how good they were, were not welcomed too often in leading breedings. This made documenting the Dalmatians involved in breeding and understanding the advantages and disadvantages of major breeding lines much easier. This pragmatic decision was instrumental in perfecting the breed.

Even today most British breeding lines are thought to be one of the best in the world. For many years their Dalmatians were bred following a more or less unified standard. It goes without saying, that some dogs can still be smaller or bigger in size. Their coats sometimes are lighter or darker in color than they should be according to the breed standard. But on the whole, British Dalmatians are thought to better fit FCI requirements, than any other representatives of the breed.

Dalmatians - Breeders - Other Breeding Lines

Most American and European Dalmatians are of high quality too. However, some breeding lines have particular differences. In fact, American Dalmatians appear to have square built bodies, or an unbalanced head. The same shortcomings are occasionally seen in Polish Dalmatians.

German breeding lines are known for a round skull that sharply melds into a short muzzle. Unlike other Dalmatians with a slightly sad expression of the eyes, German dogs produce an impression of a serious, determined living thing.

French Dalmatians are usually long-legged, elegant dogs. They have bright colors and are easily recognizable. At the same time, some people consider them to be slightly narrow in chest and smaller in size.

All these types of Dalmatians are accepted and can make brilliant show dogs and companions regardless of the country they originated from.
